HER STORY

Melissa had been through a hard season.

Not the kind of hard that shows on the outside — the kind that quietly hollows you out from the inside. Her family had been through a lot. Somewhere in the middle of holding everything together, she stopped feeling like herself.

She had also signed up to attend an art retreat — something that should have excited her. Instead, it filled her with doubt. She hadn't painted in a long time. She wasn't sure she belonged there anymore. She wasn't sure she belonged anywhere she used to feel at home.

That's when she found her way to my studio. And started finding herself after 40.

"I think deep down I needed something that reminded me I was still in there… still strong, still capable, still beautiful."

BEFORE THE SESSION

How were you feeling before your session?

I was feeling emotionally drained and honestly pretty low about myself. I didn't feel confident anymore — physically, emotionally, or creatively. I felt disconnected from the woman I used to be.

There's a particular kind of loneliness in feeling like a stranger to yourself. Melissa knew it well. And she carried one very specific fear into our session:

What was the biggest thing you were nervous about?

I was nervous I wouldn't feel comfortable in front of the camera and that the images would somehow confirm the way I had been feeling about myself.

That fear — that the camera would show her the worst version of herself, not the truest — is one I hear again and again. It's one of the most vulnerable things a woman can admit. And it's exactly why showing up anyway is so powerful.

DURING THE SESSION

What surprised you the most during the experience?

How empowering it felt. Of course Jodi made me look beautiful, but it was more than that. Our conversations during the session built me back up emotionally too. I walked away feeling stronger and more confident than I had in a very long time.

This is the part that doesn't always make it into the highlight reel of boudoir photography — the conversation. The space. The way a session can become something more than photographs when there's real connection in the room. Melissa didn't just get beautiful images. She got a few hours of being truly seen.

SEEING HER IMAGES

How did you feel when you saw your images for the first time?

Honestly, emotional. I saw a version of myself I thought I had lost. I looked polished, confident, beautiful — like "me" again. Those images gave me confidence at a time when I desperately needed it.

THE SHIFT

Has anything shifted in the way you see yourself since your session?

Yes. That experience reminded me that confidence doesn't disappear forever just because life gets heavy. It helped me reconnect with myself creatively and personally. I still use those images today for my business and social media because they remind me of the strength I found again during that season.

HER WORDS TO YOU

What would you say to another woman who is thinking about doing this but feels nervous?

Do it scared. Truly. Sometimes we wait until we feel confident to do something like this, but experiences like this can actually HELP restore confidence. You don't need to be at your "best" to deserve to feel beautiful, seen, and empowered.

What does "confidence" mean to you now?

Confidence used to mean feeling polished or put together to me. Now it means showing up as I am — older, wiser, softer in some ways, stronger in others, and secure in who I've become through all of life's ups and downs. Confidence now feels more genuine and rooted than it ever did before.

A NOTE FROM BEHIND THE LENS

Melissa chose the image with the paintbrushes for a reason. So much of her story is tied to finding her creative self again — to walking into that art retreat and believing she belonged there.

She did go. She walked in. She painted.

I don't think it's a coincidence that she booked her session first.
